Gayathrie's family is of Tamil origin and her home town is Bangalore, Karnataka.[1] Her grandfather from Trichy worked as an army officer, while both of her parents work as bankers. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology.
She got her first film offer when she was in 12th class and took it up. She considered acting "just a dream" and stated that she "never really planned on working towards it or taking it seriously as a career."[1] She said that she had stage fright and was afraid of public speaking but that she got over it once she started acting. She has also said that she is "a gypsy at heart" and that she would "have travelled and done something related to psychology" if she hadn't become an actress.
